OPINION: I’m sure reading the title the majority of people who may have not served will assume it’s a no-brainer. I mean the military is spending money on your education. Organizations like Air Force Sergeants Association (AFSA) have thousands and thousands of lobbyers advocating for service women and men. Kind one decide never to earn their Master’s degree? Well…I will explain now, neither I nor anybody else can answer that after you are looking at speaking to the mass.
The Armed Forces allow us the chance to meet individuals coming from all parts of society. Finding myself air Force (that i am sure it’s the same for those branches), everyone’s story is different. Maybe you enlisted using your associates or bachelor’s degree already and now you’re looking to strengthen knowing. Otherwise you honestly just need to check a box for professional development. Virtually all active duty members who take benefit from educational benefits may attend online classes due to an unpredictable schedule. Depending on your learning style this will likely become another barrier in comparison with traditional learning environments. With time being unpredictable obstacles inevitably arise, such as using a family, households where both mom and dad serve, single parents, etc. All circumstances vary, but there will always be challenges along this rocky road.
Twelve years into my service and I had (Permanent Change of Station) PCS into my eighth assignment, not including deployments. Each assignment provided its struggles; including times when I had been scheduled for duty sunrise to sunset – or opposite. Another hurdle for GI Bill members may be the uncertainty of continuous in their current industry post service. There are several career paths that benefit from permission or certification instead of a graduate degree. Or simply one joined the service to avoid a formal educational setting, but are necessary to participate in traditional learning environments over expected.

Although it was difficult, it was both a private choice and accomplishment I figured I could not achieve. My ambition came from wanting to set the bar for my family, and prove to myself I could complete my Master’s degree from Liberty University while serving. Lastly, I wanted to cultivate professionally, expanding my knowledge and reaching a professional level during my potential industry.
Ultimately, while serving from the military a chance to juggle both roles of student and Airman is vital. While serving being familiar with your career will be the principal focus. Depending for the push from all the branches leadership will drive how quickly members move towards pursuing education while serving. Once the world is conflict school will take a backseat. As a result of high operation tempos in select job areas, scheduling is one area one must consider when opting to pursue an extended education. Like anything, the resolve for a graduate degree is ultimately your decision of the people who desires to build up their very own educational path.
