Every hairstylist remember fondly the moment they became intrigued with hair as well as the passion for creativity that it inspires. The storyline was not different for U.S. Marine Corps veteran Kristyl Rodrigues who discovered her desire for hair while enrolled at Bellus Academy’s school of cosmetology in Poway, California. There Kristyl was studying cosmetology and pursuing a professional beauty education. I must be able to spark that passion into people where we’re thus, making this industry ten times better, we’re learning from our history and we’re carrying on that legacy,” shared Kristyl. The start: Inspiration Can Strike Anywhere
Kristyl joined the Marine Corps in 2014 and was enlisted with the age of 19. Her first duty station was at Okinawa, Japan, then an area operation in Korea. Every Sunday during Kristyl’s time in Korea, a barber would go to the site and provides haircuts to the Marines. However, this happened: “I was in a tent doing my own, personal hair,” shares Kristyl. “I would certainly do shape ups and line ups for myself, nothing too crazy, once i a Marine Sergeant reach me and have me to get a haircut. I had created never cut anybody’s hair before but I jumped directly into it anf the husband finished up loving it…and along with his outreach and leadership, literally the very next day, I needed 13 Marines prearranged personally.”
This is the first moment that Kristyl considered barbering as a future career-she chose charging $5 a haircut which is it. With a strong intrinsic motivation and entrepreneurial spirit, she worked overnight shifts on guard duty from 12a.m. to 8a.m., then cut hair through the days. What Kristyl learned was profound: Hairdressers touch more hearts than heads and each time you service complaintant, there’s impact.
The effect of your Haircut
“As a Marine, the standards for appearance are near an all-time high. The uniform must be squared away and ironed. Everything must be flush, measured properly-there’s a lot of attention to detail,” shares Kristyl. “I was considering Marines from top to bottom. It tore up my heart because we’re the optimum people on this nation and we must be walking around consequently. That’s the place that the impact i believe and heart originated in, and I seriously considered capable of transmit that through my hands to those around me…and have them walk around feeling proud and good from head to toe, and representing this nation consequently.”
Similarities In Service: Military & Barbering
After coming back from service, Kristyl asked herself just what the next challenge and chapter in her life would be. That’s when she chose to pursue her education like a barber at Bellus Academy. Gaining knowledge through her very own background looking forward, she found many similarities in their service and becoming a barber.
