Standard Types of Cookies

Most people enjoy home-baked cookies. There’s nothing more welcoming compared to odor of freshly baked cookies or even the sight ones cooling about the counter. It’s the best form of aromatherapy.

Cookies use a long history, dating back to 7th Century Persia. With the 1800s, cookie recipes began appearing in cookbooks as ‘small cakes.’ In fact, the word ‘cookie’ emanates from the Dutch word koekje or koekie this means little cake.

Recipes for cookies in a variety of styles and flavors increased in the early 1900s and continues today. Cookies include the most frequent treat baked in home based kitchens and estimated that 50 % of all home baked cookies are chocolate chip. But there are tons more types of cookies around waiting to become baked. Most cookbooks classify them because when they may be formed in to the following categories or varieties of cookies:

Bar Cookies, Squares, or Pan Cookies. The easiest and easiest type of cookie to produce. Batter or dough is pressed or spread into a pan and reduce bite-size pieces after baking. Brownies include the classic demonstration of a batter-type bar cookie nevertheless they are available in many different styles and flavors.

Drop Cookies. Quite possibly the most common type of homemade cookie developed by dropping or pushing cookie dough from your teaspoon or tablespoon onto a prepared cookie sheet. Just mix, drop, bake, and get — definitely a simple cookie type. Popular samples of drop cookies include oatmeal raisin, peanut butter, and chocolate chip.

No Bake Cookies. Another easy cookie, no bakes don’t require an oven. They are a great way to introduce kids for the fun of cookie making. A number of my favorite no bake cookie recipes include rice krispie bars, coconut date balls, rum balls, and peanut butter bars.

Ice Box or Refrigerator Cookies. Originally called “ice box cookies,” produced from stiff dough that’s refrigerated in most cases formed in to a cylinder before slicing and baking. Contemporary cookbooks may categorize refrigerator cookies as sliced or slice and bake cookies. You can maintain a log of cookie dough in the refrigerator or freezer then slice, bake, and luxuriate in a hot, fresh in the oven, homemade cookie each time a cookie craving strikes.

Shaped Cookies. These cookies are shaped manually or with molds or extruded coming from a cookie press or pastry bag. Shortbread is a classic demonstration of a hand shaped cookie. There are also a great deal of popular holiday “spritz” cookies which need a particular cookie press.

Whichever sort of cookie you decide to make, family and friends are sure to applaud your time and efforts.
