OPINION: I’m sure reading the title many people who’ve not served will assume it’s a no-brainer. I mean the military is purchasing your education. Organizations like Air Force Sergeants Association (AFSA) have hundreds of thousands of lobbyers advocating for service males and females. So why would one decide to never earn their Master’s degree? Well…I will advise you now, neither I nor other people can answer that when you are looking at speaking for the mass.
The Soldiers allow us the chance to meet individuals coming from all areas of life. In air Force (i am sure it’s exactly the same for those branches), everyone’s story differs. You could possibly enlisted along with your associates or bachelor’s degree already and after this you’re planning to strengthen knowing about it. Or you honestly should just check a box for professional development. In line with the Air Force Demographics, Air Force enlisted members only account for 1.8% of master’s degree when compared to the 46.3% of their officers. This statistic emphasizes the varying education levels between people who find themselves enlisted vs officers.
BUT WHY NOT
Now, why would any serviceman or woman elect to never pursue traditional learning? Again these circumstances cannot speak for anyone, but simply only snapshot of the items I have experienced both personally and thru the eye area of my peers. Usually, essentially the most challenging obstacle proves to be time, specifically duty diary for shift workers. Many active duty members having benefit of educational benefits may attend classes online due to an unpredictable schedule. According to your learning style this might become another barrier compared to traditional learning environments. As time passes being unpredictable obstacles inevitably arise, including having a family, households where both dad and mom serve, single parents, etc. All circumstances vary, but you will always find challenges along this rocky road.
Twelve years into my service and I had (Permanent Change of Station) PCS into my eighth assignment, eliminating deployments. Each assignment provided its very own struggles; including when I had been scheduled for duty sunrise to sunset – or opposite. Another hurdle for Military members may be the uncertainty of constant of their current career field post service. There are some career paths that reap the benefits of permission or certification rather than graduate degree. Or maybe one joined the plan to avoid an official educational setting, but are required to engage in traditional learning environments more than expected.
For you to
In the same way I gave you main reasons why service members elect to never continue the amount (or at least put up a fight), you will find equally as a number of, or more, why they should. Personal growth can be purchased through countless platforms but let’s be honest if it’s not documented by the right institute the validity of one’s degree or certification declines. There’s not only adding your business with a certificate; it’s gaining the technical knowledge of your respective field. It’s another couple of proving your dedication through any additional step, letting others know you’re taking yourself seriously and therefore are heading to the manager level.
Why wouldn’t anyone wish to expand their knowledge of their dedicated field of choice? There is a type of assumption that you’re “in the field” experience allows you to really comprehend the nuances of the part. The expectation is always that one has a good grasp on what things work in their current field, advanced schooling affords the chance to view a different side of your industry. Regardless of what field you’re in, people that get yourself a degree in advanced schooling commence to stick out and therefore are considered the expert. Let’s be realistic, post-service tasks are not whatever they was once. Filter systems make use of your education as being a return on investment – of yourself.
WHY DID I?
Just like the majority of service members I have faced exactly the same obstacles discussed. I’ve been through eight assignments and diverse deployments including Pakistan and Iraq. Although it was difficult, it absolutely was both your own choice and accomplishment I was thinking I could not achieve. My ambition originated from wanting to set the bar for my family, and prove to myself I could complete my Master’s degree from Liberty University while serving. Lastly, I desired growing professionally, expanding my knowledge and reaching an executive level within my potential industry.
Ultimately, while serving inside the military the ability to juggle both roles of student and Airman is essential. While serving being proficient in your career will be the key focus. Depending about the push from each of the branches leadership will drive how fast members move towards pursuing education while serving. Once the world is at conflict school will take a backseat. As a result of high operation tempos in select job areas, scheduling is one area you need to consider when choosing to pursue an extended education. Like anything, the resolve for a graduate degree is ultimately the choice of the person who wants to formulate their particular educational path.
