OPINION: I’m sure looking at the title the majority of people that have not served will assume it’s a no-brainer. I mean the military is purchasing your education. Organizations like Air Force Sergeants Association (AFSA) have tens of thousands of lobbyers advocating for service people. So why would one decide to not earn their Master’s degree? Well…I will advise you now, neither I nor anyone else can answer any time it comes to speaking for that mass.
The Defense force allow us the opportunity to meet individuals coming from all areas of life. In mid-air Force (which I guarantee it’s the same for many branches), everyone’s story is unique. You may enlisted along with your associates or bachelor’s degree already and now you’re seeking to strengthen knowing. Or maybe you honestly just need to check a box for professional development. In line with the Air Force Demographics, Air Force enlisted members only take into account 1.8% of master’s degree when compared to 46.3% of the officers. This statistic emphasizes the varying education levels between those who find themselves enlisted vs officers.
So why NOT
Now, why would any serviceman or woman elect to not pursue traditional learning? Again these circumstances cannot speak for all, but just only snapshot products We’ve experienced both personally and thru the eyes of my peers. Usually, probably the most challenging obstacle turns out to be time, specifically duty diary for shift workers. Many active duty members having good thing about educational benefits will probably attend classes on the web because of an unpredictable schedule. Depending on your learning style this may become another barrier in comparison to traditional learning environments. As time passes being unpredictable obstacles inevitably arise, such as having a family, households where both mom and dad serve, single parents, etc. All circumstances vary, but there will always be challenges along this rocky road.
Twelve years into my service and i also had (Permanent Change of Station) PCS into my eighth assignment, excluding deployments. Each assignment provided its struggles; including when I used to be scheduled for duty sunrise to sunset – or the opposite. Another hurdle for Navy members will be the uncertainty of continuing of their current industry post service. There are several career paths that take advantage of a license or certification instead of a graduate degree. Or maybe one joined the plan to avoid a formal educational setting, but are needed to be involved in traditional learning environments more than expected.
For you to
Equally as I gave you explanations why service members elect to not continue the amount (or at least offered a fight), you’ll find just like various reasons, if not more, why they should. Personal growth can be acquired through countless platforms but let’s boost the comfort if it’s not documented by the right institute the validity of one’s degree or certification declines. There’s more than just adding your business into a certificate; it’s gaining the technical expertise in your respective field. It’s another a few proving your dedication by subtracting any additional step, letting others know you are taking yourself seriously and are heading to the manager level.
Why wouldn’t anyone desire to expand his or her knowledge of their dedicated field associated with preference? There is a kind of assumption that you’re “in the field” experience permits you to really understand the how to go about the role. The expectation is that one has a good grasp on how things operate in their current field, higher education provides the opportunity to see a different side of an industry. It doesn’t matter what field you’re in, those that obtain a degree in higher education commence to jump out and are considered the expert. Let’s face it, post-service efforts are not whatever they was previously. So why wouldn’t you takes place education being a return on your investment – of yourself.
WHY DID I?
Similar to the most service members We’ve faced the same obstacles discussed. I’ve been through eight assignments and numerous deployments including Pakistan and Iraq. Although it was difficult, it turned out both an individual choice and accomplishment I figured I possibly could not achieve. My ambition came from wanting to set the bar in my family, and influence myself I possibly could complete my Master’s degree from Liberty University while serving. Lastly, I needed to cultivate professionally, expanding my knowledge and reaching a professional level within my potential industry.
Ultimately, while serving in the military to be able to juggle both roles of student and Airman is vital. While serving being proficient in your job will be the principal focus. Depending on the push from each one of the branches leadership will drive how rapid members move towards pursuing education while serving. In the event the world is within conflict school might take a backseat. Due to high operation tempos in select career fields, scheduling is a thing you must consider when opting to pursue a continued education. Like anything, the persistence for a graduate degree is ultimately the decision of the individual who desires to produce their unique educational path.
