The Magical Handshake ~ Perhaps you have Tried It? By Faith Faith BBE, CTM, NE

We all know the value of an excellent first impression. In only seconds of the meeting, people attain a plethora of information regarding us. They notice our face, hair, clothing, body size, posture, demeanor as well as the sound of our voice. It’s an essential time since there is no second opportunity to create a good first impression.

This happens … the handshake.

One time i took a communications class at a nearby church. The instructor had 30+ attendees lineup single file. The instructions would look him inside the eye and shake his hand. I was confident I knew how to properly shake hands.

Following your last person shook the instructor’s hand, he asked, “Tell me everything you seriously considered my handshake. Was it an excellent handshake or a bad handshake?” I liked his handshake. It had been a company grip like mine. His handshake confirmed if you ask me I knew the best way to shake hands. I said, like everyone else, “good handshake.”

Then he said a thing that completely took me by surprise.

He was quoted saying the main reason everybody liked his handshake was simple. He mirrored ours. If the handshake was firm, his was firm. Whether it was a light touch, his would be a light touch. When they used their other hand to understand his, his other hand grasped theirs. He explained this handshake technique creates an immediate good impression and likeability.

Likeability?

Yes. It’s just like the way you feel when we meet a complete stranger and discover we share the identical name. Or much more conversation having a stranger, we learn we share a mutual friend. We magically like this person. For this reason I call it the Magical Handshake.

From here on, It is best to never, ever, shake another person’s hand. Instead, allow them to shake yours. Mirror their business. If Hand Shake ’re offered a strong grip, mirror a firm grip. If you’re offered a soft grip, mirror a gentle grip. Remember to mirror the shake too. It’s all about the grip and shake.

The only exception happens when someone offers you a handshake with their palm facing down. As you shake hands, they’ve got the upper-hand and therefore are in control. They dominate. This is known as an aggressive handshake.

When offered a hostile handshake, respond giving them a Double-Handed handshake having a wee turn. Start with your palms slightly upwards, grasping their hand with you have. Then, straighten their handshake vertically with a wee turn as you’re shaking. This communicates for them, “we are equal.”

Next time you want to produce a good first impression, give the Magical Handshake an attempt. Get it done if you park and fly people. It’s an easy, surefire way to boost your likeability factor.
